How it works

A segmentation model separates the subject from its background, then the background is erased to transparency. It runs on our server rather than in your browser: the model is 168 MB, so running it on your device meant downloading all of it before the tool did anything and then waiting around a minute and a half. On the server the same model — the full-precision one, which is what keeps fine detail like fur and paws clean — takes a few seconds and costs you no download at all. Your image is uploaded to do this and deleted afterwards on the normal retention schedule. Output is PNG or WebP because those keep transparency; a JPEG cannot. You can also put the cut-out straight onto a colour, a gradient or a pattern, which saves cutting out, downloading, and feeding the result to a second tool.
