Instagram image sizes
- For photos, the 4:5 portrait shape (1080×1350) fills more of a phone screen than a square.
- Your profile grid shows feed posts cropped to 3:4, so keep the subject near the middle.
- Stories and Reels share the 9:16 frame; keep text away from the top and bottom edges.
Facebook image sizes
- Facebook recompresses every upload, so resize to the display size first and use PNG for text.
- The cover is cropped differently on desktop and phones; 1640×924 keeps the middle safe on both.
YouTube image sizes
- Thumbnails are seen small: one face or object and three or four large words read best.
- The banner shows a different slice on TVs, desktops and phones; only the centre is always seen.
LinkedIn image sizes
- A company page cover is a different, wider strip: 1128×191.
- Charts and slides read better as a PDF document post than as one crowded image.
X (Twitter) image sizes
- A 16:9 image shows in full on every device. Very tall images can be cropped in the timeline until someone opens them.
Pinterest image sizes
- A short title on the pin itself helps it read at a glance in a busy grid.
Link previews image sizes
- Set the image with the og:image tag. After changing it, ask Facebook’s Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn’s Post Inspector to fetch it again.

What is the best image size for social media in general?
There is no single size, because every platform frames images differently. If you need one image for several places, 1080×1080 works in most feeds, and 1200×630 is right for link previews. The table above lists the exact size for each placement.
What happens if I upload the wrong size?
The platform crops or squeezes it to fit, so the edges or text can be cut off. Resizing to the exact size first, with the subject in the safe middle, keeps the picture as you intended.
Should I use JPG or PNG?
JPG for photos, PNG for graphics with text, logos or flat colour. Platforms recompress uploads, and PNG keeps letters sharp through that.
Can I make every size from one image at once?
Yes. The social media batch pack resizes one image to every size on this page and gives you a ZIP.
